Ledger Mint full review

Ledger Mint costs $59 a month and scored 4.2 out of 5 for variance notes a controller can read without a meeting. The screen is the operating-expense table: contractors over budget, software under, travel over.

The variance table

Ledger Mint's operating table shows contractors at $48,200, $6,400 over budget; software at $11,900, $800 under; and travel at $4,100, $2,200 over. The note field on contractors says the two invoices arrived in the same month. The note on travel says the conference was pulled forward. The note on software says the annual renewal is next quarter. None of the notes says only "timing" and stops.

What a controller does with it

A controller can read those three lines without a meeting. The export is a CSV of line, actual, budget, variance, and note. We changed the contractor actual and the variance updated. We could not make the note required, which is the gap: a line can still be exported with an empty note. The 4.2 score would be higher if an empty note blocked the export. At $59 a month it is cheaper than Closeweek and it does a different job. Closeweek stops the close. Ledger Mint explains the gap after the close exists.

The limit

Ledger Mint does not know if the contractor invoices were coded to the right department. The note is only as good as the person who typed it. The review says that on the page because a fluent note can still be wrong, and the product does not audit the underlying bill.

Three notes, none of them "timing"

Contractors are $6,400 over because two invoices landed together. Software is $800 under because the annual renewal is next quarter. Travel is $2,200 over because a conference moved. A controller can ask for those invoices. A controller cannot ask a follow-up of the word timing. The empty-note export is the gap that keeps the score at 4.2. Require the note and the score moves.

Ledger Mint does not audit the bill. The note can name the wrong invoice. The review says so, because a fluent sentence is not a control.

The three notes, and the questions they allow

Contractors, $48,200 actual against a budget that left them $6,400 over. The note said two invoices landed in the same month, and it named the vendor. A controller can ask for those two invoices. Software, $11,900, $800 under, note that the annual renewal is next quarter and this month is only the monthly seats. A controller can ask which renewal and which month. Travel, $4,100, $2,200 over, note that a conference moved forward. A controller can ask for the registration receipt. None of these questions can be asked of the word "timing." The export columns were line, actual, budget, variance, and note. We changed the contractor actual by $1,000 and the variance moved by $1,000. The note did not update itself, which is correct. A note that rewrites itself would be a new claim and would need its own test.

We then cleared the travel note and exported again. The file still downloaded, with an empty note cell. That is the gap that keeps the score at 4.2 instead of a higher number. This desk's variance guide is stricter than the product: an empty note means the line is not finished. Ledger Mint currently allows the export anyway. We wrote the gap instead of pretending the product enforces the guide. $59 a month is cheaper than Closeweek and it is a different job. The close can be finished and the explanation can still be missing.

What the note does not prove

The contractor note does not prove the hire was wise. It proves where the invoices are. A fluent sentence can name the wrong vendor. Ledger Mint does not audit the bill, and Mintcanopy does not pretend a language model is a control. If the note and the invoice disagree, the invoice wins and the note gets corrected. The review stays up either way.

The empty cell

We cleared the travel note and the file still downloaded. That empty cell is why the score is 4.2 and not higher. The three notes that were filled in are the product: two contractor invoices, a renewal next quarter, a conference pulled forward. A controller can ask for the documents. A controller cannot ask a follow-up of "timing." Mintcanopy does not treat the note as an audit of whether the hire was wise. If the note names the wrong vendor, the invoice wins and the note is corrected. The review stays.

What we changed, and what we cleared

Adding $1,000 to contractor actuals moved the variance by $1,000 and did not rewrite the note. That is correct. Clearing the travel note still produced a CSV. That is the gap. The filled notes, two invoices, a renewal next quarter, and a conference moved forward, are the reason the product scores at all. Mintcanopy keeps 4.2 until an empty note blocks the export. The sentences do not audit the underlying bill. If the note and the invoice disagree, the invoice wins.

The note did not rewrite itself

A $1,000 change in contractor actuals moved only the variance. The sentence about two invoices stayed until a person changed it. Clearing travel left an empty cell and the CSV still downloaded. Both results are in the 4.2. Mintcanopy will move the score if an empty note starts blocking the export. Until then the controller, not the software, decides the line is finished. A fluent wrong vendor is still wrong.
